What You'll Learn

The Chessboard & Notation

Files, ranks and diagonals, setting up the board correctly, and reading and writing moves.

Piece Movements & Values

How each piece moves and captures, and what each one is worth.

Special Moves & Draws

Castling, en passant, promotion, stalemate, and the other ways a game ends drawn.

Check & Checkmate

Recognising when the king is in danger, the three ways out, and spotting mate in one.

Your First Checkmates

Delivering mate with king and queen, and with king and rook, against a lone king.

Basic Tactics

Simple forks, pins, and ways to win material from your opponent.

Course Structure

  1. 1

    Module 1: Welcome to Chess

    The board, piece placement, the object of the game, and reading and writing moves in algebraic notation.

  2. 2

    Module 2: The Pieces

    How each piece moves and captures — pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, queen and king — and what each is worth.

  3. 3

    Module 3: Special Rules

    Castling, en passant, pawn promotion, stalemate and the other drawn endings.

  4. 4

    Module 4: Check & Checkmate

    Recognising check, practising the three ways out, and finding mate in one.

  5. 5

    Module 5: Finishing the Game

    Mate with king and queen and with king and rook, then complete games with guidance, touch-move and good sportsmanship.

Beginner

    Module 3: Opening Principles

    Weeks 7–9

    Rook and pawn endings, opposite-coloured and good-versus-bad bishops, knight against bishop, bishop and knight mate, and endgame defence.

    Module 4: Opening Preparation

    Weeks 21–26

    Module 5: Classics, Defence & Competitive Practice

    Weeks 27–32

    Annotated master games, defending worse positions, time management under pressure, a personal error database, and tournament routine.

    Deep theoretical preparation for all main lines, monthly updates from grandmaster practice, novelty preparation, and opponent-specific opening analysis.

    Area 2: Endgame Mastery

    All theoretical endings relevant to your level, including complex rook, queen and minor-piece endgames, to a professional standard of accuracy.

  3. 3

    Area 3: Calculation & Patterns

    Advanced tactical patterns (interference, zugzwang, geometric motifs), long-range calculation drills (6+ moves), and personalised error analysis.

  4. 4

    Area 4: Psychological Preparation

    Pre-tournament mindset coaching, norm cycle strategy (pairings, colour distribution), must-win situation handling, and post-tournament debrief.

  5. 5

    Area 5: Game Analysis

    Deep analysis of your tournament and practice games every session, building a personal weakness database, and coach-selected GM games matched to your style.
